SUPPORT GROUPS

For Family Caregivers

No one should have to care for a loved one with dementia without help. Joining a family caregiver support group can provide you with a critical support system throughout your caregiving journey. Duet’s Meaning & Hope Institute invites you to join a virtual support group led by the caring and compassionate Caregiver Services team at Duet.

Considering Joining a Support Group?

Are you caring for a loved one who requires round-the-clock attention? Is your own well-being suffering as you tend to the needs of the person you’re caring for? Do you feel alone in your obligation?

If you answered yes to one of these questions, joining a support group with other family caregivers may be something you want to consider. Below are six reasons why caregivers often join support group:

  1. To meet others who “get it”–You will discover you are not alone. Others in similar circumstances feel overwhelmed and frustrated as you do. You love the person for whom you’re caring, yet you want to scream, punch a pillow, run away.
  2. To share, vent, compare–Get it off your chest in a safe space without guilt or judgement. You can be honest about your feelings. You are normal. You are human. You will get the validation you need, and you will carry on.
  3. To learn–Through others’ experiences, you will learn coping strategies and be directed to resources. Every situation is unique, yet there’s plenty of commonality.
  4. To realize you are #1–You must include caring for yourself in your regimen. After all, you are a person who matters, too. Also, without you, your loved one would have no one. You must place the oxygen mask on yourself, first, so you are able to assist another.
  5. To pay it forward — Save someone else the energy and exasperation you expended on trial and error.
  6. To establish camaraderie–Isolation is a killer. Literally. Connecting with others will help draw you outand energize you to carry on. If your own family is not supportive, your fellow support group members can become your “psychological family” that encourages you

Testimonials from Caregivers About Support Groups

I wasn’t a support group kind ofperson. One day I was invited to sit in ona group, and it made a big differencein my life as a caregiver. It was nice toconnect withotherswho got what I was going through, and didn’tjudge. They listened and shared their experiences, including how they overcame the same obstacles I wasfacing.

My support group is wonderful at holding space for all our stories. Our meetings have become a mini-retreat time for me.

The compassion and caring of group members and leaders help my confidence. I receive great comfort knowing that I am not alone. Others are on this journey, and I learn from them. It is satisfying to feel that I have helped others, too.

The support group helps me cope, and to keep things in a healthier perspective. I realize the swaying emotions that accompany caregiving are typical and normal.

What is said here, stays here. We are comfortable to say and ask things. The camaraderie and support are very important! It is something I really look forward to.
