Empowering Latino Caregivers: Dementia Support Through Art

| 9 Minute Read
Written by: Meaning & Hope Institute

More than 40 percent of Arizona’s population is Hispanic, and Latino caregivers often face a unique combination of challenges. One key barrier is that many don’t see themselves as “caregivers” in the traditional sense, which means they may not seek or even know about critical resources and support services available to them.

Adding to this challenge is a common misconception: 6 out of 10 Latinos believe that memory loss is a normal part of aging. Yet, approximately 13% of Latinos aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. That’s why culturally relevant outreach and education are so important.

Duet is committed to reaching and engaging Latino families in meaningful ways. One unique approach is through Memoria En Mosaicos, an art workshop designed by Linda Guijosa, Duet’s Multicultural Services Manager, in partnership with Erik Gonzalez from Urbanists Collective. It is designed to raise awareness and spark dialogue about dementia through education, storytelling, and painting.

Through collaboration, we can support one another to serve the community holistically.

During this workshop, participants paint brain figures on canvas while learning about the brain’s basic functions and how they’re affected by different types of dementia. The process is hands-on, visual, and conversational, creating an open and welcoming environment for learning and reflection.

Memoria En Mosaicos is led by Linda Guijosa and Erik Gonzalez. Linda regularly collaborates with organizations that serve the Hispanic community to ensure as many Latino caregivers and social service providers are being reached.

“Through collaboration, we can support one another to serve the community holistically,” Linda says. “Collaboration also fosters inclusivity and cultural understanding to ensure programs reflect the needs and values of those we serve. This creates more meaningful connections and sustainable outcomes.”

Supporting this workshop is just one example of how Duet is tailoring its services to better support diverse communities. Our signature program, Finding Meaning and Hope, is also available in Spanish. This 10-week video discussion series helps caregivers cope with the emotional toll of caregiving, particularly the ambiguous grief that comes with supporting a loved one with dementia. It provides tools for reflection, connection, and reclaiming a sense of purpose. Duet also offers Spanish-language support groups, providing a space where caregivers can share experiences, gain encouragement, and build community.
